The Canadian Home Builders’ Association announced its Awards in Housing Excellence in Jasper on September 22. Five-time Builder of the Year, Calgary’s Morrison Homes, took home the Ralph Scurfield Builder of the Year award.

The Woodrow Wilson International Centre’s Canada Institute recognized Harley Hotchkiss for corporate citizenship and The Right Honourable Stephen Harper for public service at the institute’s annual dinner in October in Calgary. The Woodrow Wilson award for corporate citizenship is given to an executive who has shown “a deep concern for the common good beyond the bottom line,” while the public service award goes to those who “have served with distinction in public life.”
The Yves Landry Foundation announced that the Honourable Ralph Klein has been chosen as Person of the Year, to be presented at its annual awards gala on October 26. The awards recognize those individuals and businesses that best exemplify the vision of the late Yves Landry, chairman, president and CEO of Chrysler Canada.
Appointments
Genome Alberta appointed its new president and CEO, David Bailey, in August. Bailey has a PhD in genetics and animal breeding from the University of Alberta and has managed and directed national research programs in food safety, quality and processing involving 11 federal research centres nationally with a budget of $20 million.
The Alberta Securities Commission has appointed Tamera Van Brunt as director, communications and investor education. She will be responsible for providing strategic communications counsel and support in all areas of the Commission. Prior to her appointment, Van Brunt was manager, corporate communications, for TransAlta Corporation.
Herb Der has been re-appointed to his second two-year term as the chair of the Red Deer College board of governors. He has been chair since 2004, is a past member of the Red Deer College Foundation and recently retired from his position as president and CEO of Community Credit Union Ltd.
Sandra Conn has been named vice-president of external relations by the University of Alberta. She will direct the university’s efforts in marketing and media relations, government relations, alumni relations and development. Prior to this position, Conn served as assistant vice-president for university relations at Michigan State University.
