Economic picture
Red Deer’s location has meant plenty of retail and hospitality industry growth. After that, oilfield services is amongst the biggest employers, with agriculture and manufacturing also significant contributors.

Under construction
A $30-million, 12-storey office tower is under construction downtown as well as a $30-million police headquarters. A multimillion-dollar renovation of one of the city’s major malls continues, and new retail continues to pop up in the south end of town. All forms of construction, especially housing, boomed before slowing in 2008.

Conversation starter
The City of Red Deer’s 2009 capital budget anticipates nearly $500 million of spending as part of a $1.7-billion, 10-year plan. A city hall expansion and construction of a major ring road are some of the big-ticket items meant to keep pace with growth that has added 20,000 people since 2001.

Where to eat
Red Deer has plenty of Tex-Mex choices but eateries serving Indian, Greek, Asian and even Russian dishes are also on offer. For good food in an intimate setting, try Astha Fine Indian Cuisine restaurant. Another newcomer worth checking out is Redstone Grill.

Where to sleep
With 2,100 rooms for rent, most major chains are represented. For something a little different, try the McIntosh Bed and Breakfast located downtown in one of the city’s oldest homes.

Diversion
Just outside the city is Fort Normandeau, a re-creation of an RCMP fort established during the Riel Rebellion in 1885. Think graffiti is a new thing? Check out the names carved into a preserved beam by 19th century fort dwellers. And bring your inner tube: the fort is a popular launching spot for lazy-paced flotillas on the Red Deer River during summer scorchers. Missed the season? A few kilometres east of the city is Canyon Ski Area, one of the best skiing spots outside the Rockies.
