The emerging workforce is far more environmentally conscious than previous generations and many are taking sustainability into account when looking for work. “It’s a trend important to the employees and candidates we bring on board,” says Cathy Grady-Ryan, BMO Bank of Montreal’s human resources manager, Prairies. “Employees’ values have to align with the company.”
BMO not only wants to cater to these potential employees but wants to be a leader in environmental sustainability, proactively working to reduce its environmental footprint. While most businesses now have workplace recycling and energy conservation programs, BMO staff are looking to make the company’s functions and day-to-day interactions environmentally strategic in every way.
Over 80% of cross-branch meetings are conducted through video- and teleconferencing to cut down on travel, and employees are involved in several sustainability initiatives. After launching the “One Million Acts of Green” challenge, BMO had over 300 members join in just two months. In 2009, says Grady-Ryan, “Our focus is on continued opportunities to reduce our footprint,” including purchasing carbon offsets and opening three LEED-accredited Canadian branches, including one in Calgary.
