I recently scanned through a copy of Leonard Brody and David Raffa’s Everything I Needed to Know about Business I Learned from a Canadian, which came out in a second edition this year. Outside the energy and power industries, applying an environmental filter to corporate decision-making – and getting the associated marketing bang for your green buck – can be relatively easy. When First Calgary Savings & Credit Union formed an internal environmental advocacy team, for example, the financial institution wasn’t responding to any onerous regulatory or community pressures, or to negative publicity resulting from images of environmental havoc splashed across the pages of National Geographic. This month marks our annual Green Issue, something that doesn’t quite compute with people unfamiliar with Alberta’s diverse business environment. Whenever I’m ribbed by my West Coast or U.S.-dwelling relatives about what an eco-villain Alberta is, I ask them whether they have gone their entire careers, as I have (more than 20 years), without regularly commuting to work by car.
