Use a Personal Shopper
|
Lack the time to update your outfit? Many major clothiers offer a free personal shopper. “It’s not a status symbol to use this service,” says Holt Renfrew personal shopper Lisa Popplewell. “It makes sense in recessionary times – there’s no charge and no minimum purchase.” Personal shoppers can pre-select, say, a business wardrobe for people shifting gears in their career or returning from a maternity leave. They pre-select items – general or very specific – for shoppers and show them in suites by appointment. “It saves time and can help average shoppers make smarter choices so they leave feeling great.” An hour’s time trying on a short list of purpose-selected clothes is $0. |

Comfort in Your Own Skin

Appearance doesn’t stop at textiles. Men and women are taking better care of their hair and skin. While it’s OK to find a barber and stick with him, make sure he isn’t stuck in 1997. If a person’s look hasn’t changed in a decade, it may be time to mix it up. Appearance-wise, success means cleansing, moisturizing and, for men, undertaking good pre-shave and post-shave care. “I use Kiehl’s skin products,” says Bob Long, in high-end sales. Available at Holt Renfrew in Calgary and Edmonton, the New York-based product line has a 150-year history and a list of devotees. Both sexes need good products to look fresh. And a healthy, glowing complexion is a successful look. Maybe that’s the upside to a down economy: as Sam Abouhassan, custom tailor, says, “It’s nice to see people taking better care of themselves.”
