Look Good, Feel Good

Calgary’s Getaway Spa for men sells salon services and now also features image consulting. “We offer home closet and shopping consultant services,” says Getaway president Annette Burwash. “We often consult with men who are making a career change.” A popular Getaway treat: the hot razor shave. Set aside an hour for an exfoliating scrub to tease out ingrown hairs, followed by steamy towels to open pores. Estheticians lather on the shaving gel, shave you expertly and massage with moisturizer. Cost: $70.

Face Forward

Shake off the winter blahs with a trip to the Board Room Men’s Grooming & Spa on Edmonton’s Jasper Avenue for any number of spa and “medical esthetic” services (laser hair removal, for example). A basic Cut and Run special includes a haircut and style, shave and mini manicure. Manager Jackie Pawluk says free perks include a hot towel, a scalp massage, a customized brow, ear and nose hair trim, as well as a shoe shine.
Cost: $109.

Taste the Teambuilding

Whether it’s a way to relax after five or a unique take on teambuilding, Kerstin Roos of Kerstin’s Chocolates can accommodate you. She offers chocolate tastings, similar to wine tastings, in her Edmonton shop, or off site to larger groups. “I teach about the history of chocolate-making, from bean to bar,” she says. Ninety- to 120-minute presentations and tastings cost about $35 per person, up to 35 people. After that, she charges an hourly rate.

Think Global, Eat Local

Former Alberta restaurateur Julianna Mimande has teamed up with Gabe Wong and Zach Ayotte to produce a gorgeous cookbook – a tribute to central Alberta’s fields and farms – called We Eat Together. (See Next Up profile.)
Cost: $40.
