Space Tourism

by Scott Messenger

“We know the space shuttle has pretty well had its day,” says Michael Broadhurst, Calgary-based president and CEO of Vision 2000 Travel Group. “It’s an incredibly ridiculous way to launch people into space.” Critics of the NASA program, set for retirement this year, would agree, pointing out extraordinary inefficiency and questionable safety. And regarding space tourism, it’s not particularly civilized. Promising “a fair amount of comfort,” Broadhurst, Western Canada’s first accredited space agent for private carrier Virgin Galactic, began booking suborbital trips on the company’s SpaceShipTwo late last year. Welcome to the new space age – if you can afford it.
