The Buzz | He-cession

Jul 1, 2010

\he-‘se-shn\
n. the recession of jobs in male-dominated industries

Following the wreckage of the economic downturn, statisticians and industry number crunchers have calculated the number of casualties and it appears the most job losses occurred in male-dominated industries (for Statistics Canada, that would be construction, transportation and manufacturing) resulting in a “he-cession.” While Alberta’s unemployment rate is still the third lowest (6.6%) in the country, behind Manitoba and Saskatchewan’s, there is good news for those working in the hardest hit industries: in its Labour Force Statistics for May 2010, Alberta Employment and Immigration reported that from April to May construction and manufacturing employment increased by 5,500 and 3,000 people, respectively. That could indicate Alberta is experiencing a “he-covery.”
