Alberta’s Biggest Companies Jockey for the Top Spot on the 2010 Venture 100 List

Edmonton, Alberta (September 1, 2010) – For the tenth consecutive year, Alberta Venture magazine releases its annual ranking of the top-grossing Alberta-based companies. Compiled by Alberta Venture’s editorial team and PricewaterhouseCoopers, The Venture 100, Next 100 and the PWC Private 50 lists establish a snapshot of Alberta’s economic contributors over the last year and celebrate the success of the province’s thriving business community.

Alberta’s heavy-hitting oil and gas industry giants top the 2010 Venture 100 list with Calgary-based Suncor Energy Inc. moving up into the number one spot after its high-profile 2009 merger with Petro-Canada, followed by Imperial Oil Ltd. and Husky Energy Inc. rounding out the top three. Fairborne Energy Ltd. tops the Next 100 list while Syncrude Canada Ltd. and Katz Group maintain the top spots for three years running on the PWC Private 50 List, a ranking of the top privately-held companies in Alberta.

“This is the definitive, most comprehensive ranking of Alberta corporations, published exclusively in the pages of Alberta Venture,” says editor Paul Marck. “There is a wealth of information and features, including behind-the-scenes stories chronicling Alberta’s top companies.” Marck says the biggest surprise in the Venture 100 is the deep impact on corporate revenues from the global recession. For instance, 68 of the top-ranked 100 companies experienced revenue shrinkage in 2009 and total revenues came in 29 per cent lower than the previous year. “The fortunes of many firms shifted and readers will find the economic landscape has changed significantly year over year.”

The entire Venture 100 rankings are featured in the September issue of Alberta Venture, currently available on newsstands and online and in expanded, sortable and searchable format at albertaventure.com. This year’s online data also takes advantage of a brand new data visualization tool from Google Labs, Google Fusion Tables.

“Each year we try to bring something new to the online presentation of the data from the Venture 100 for our readers. Using the fusion tool allows us to mash up several years of data from the list, showing percentage revenue increase and decrease over longer periods and deliver new tables and charts that are optimized for the web,” says web editor Duncan Kinney. “This data set is very deep, and this new tool is very robust. Plus, we’re engaging Alberta Venture’s business audience throughout the month of September by taking requests via Twitter (@AlbertaVenture) for new visualizations on the data set.”

Alberta Venture is Alberta’s only province-wide business magazine covering the latest issues and trends concerning Alberta’s business community.
