Alberta Venture magazine has named Don Lowry Alberta’s Business Person of the Year for 2010. As President and CEO of Epcor and Chair of Capital Power Inc, Don Lowry’s dynamic leadership has dramatically changed the face of the utilities industry in Alberta. The full story appears in the December issue of Alberta Venture, as well as online at albertaventure.com, beginning December 1, 2010. Lowry’s achievements will also be celebrated at an award luncheon held in Edmonton on January 20, 2011.

Selected by a panel of adjudicators that included past Business Person of the Year award recipients, Don Lowry was chosen for  the innovative leadership style and far reaching vision he has demonstrated at Epcor. After first building Epcor into a utilities powerhouse, he broke it up and created one of Canada’s largest investor-owned generation companies: the Capital Power Corporation.”The adjudicators were particularly impressed by how the successful implementation of Don’s strategy for Epcor and Capital Power has unfolded over the past year,” says Ruth Kelly, Publisher of Alberta Venture. “Don is a strong contributor to his community and the country, through bold initiatives such as Epcor’s sponsorship of the 2010 Winter Olympics. He is truly a role model to emulate.”

In addition to its December cover story and award lunch, Alberta Venture will be introducing a new micro site devoted to the annual Business Person of the Year feature. This new website, which goes live on Dec. 1, will feature past winners, event details, exclusive podcasts, and editorial content from the current issue of Alberta Venture. In addition, online readers will have the chance to vote on a new online feature: Alberta’s Top Business Person of the Last 100 Years. A hundred of the province’s most well known business people were selected and will be voted on by online readers over the next two months.

The Alberta’s Business Person of the Year Award luncheon, to be held on January 20, 2011 at the Westin Hotel in downtown Edmonton, will feature an address by Lowry entitled “Leadership from the Ground Up”. Members of the media are invited to attend and should contact Alberta Venture’s Edmonton office at (780) 990-0839 ext. 244 to RSVP.

The Alberta’s Business Person of the Year Award is sponsored by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta. The official suit supplier for this year’s award recipient is Henry Singer.

Alberta Venture is Alberta’s only province-wide business magazine covering the latest issues and trends concerning Alberta’s business community. The Alberta’s Business Person of the Year issue will be available on newsstands across Alberta and online at albertaventure.com beginning December 1, 2010.
