How to combine style and practicality when it comes to winter footwear

Even the most style-conscious Albertans struggle to balance form and function when the weather gets cold...until now

Jan 2, 2014

It’s easy to embrace the upside of winter in Alberta, where the cold’s a minor inconvenience and winter sports abound. But still, there’s one undeniable downside to winter weather: your feet.

Wear your nice leather brogues or heels outside in the salt and snow long enough and you might as well throw them in the trash. And yet the more weather-appropriate choices in your closet probably make you look like you’re trying to walk to the North Pole rather than work. Even the most style-conscious Albertans struggle to balance form and function when the weather gets cold.

Mercifully, there are ways to combine the two without sacrificing either. Here are a few of them:

This boot’s velour lining might not hold up to extreme cold, but its synthetic rubber outsoles and Blondo’s waterprotect leather technology make this boot an obvious choice for warmer days when slushy conditions would otherwise make for cold, wet feet.

Reminiscent of the popular equestrian styles, this two-tone leather boot steps it up for winter with its warm wool and polyester lining. The polyurethane and rubber outsole give good purchase on slippery sidewalks and Ecco’s light but solid construction will keep you from dragging your feet through the snow.

We know, we know – Uggs? Nobody’s going to know that these bad boys are related to their more ubiquitous female cousin from looking at them, so as long as you can keep the secret, so can these boots. Don’t worry – we won’t give it away either.

This one walks a finer line when it comes to balancing style and substance – the leather/rubber combination means it will do fine on a crisp, clear day, but might underwhelm in the snow. But it’s still a shoe (okay, a boot) that will set you apart from 95 per cent of your galosh-wearing peers.
