Mythbuster: What does Alberta export?

The shipping news

Mar 25, 2014

Alberta’s business owners hear it constantly: expand your overseas markets. From the intensity of the exhortations, you’d be forgiven for thinking they have never looked beyond their backyard. But that’s not the case.

Over the last 10 years, Albertan exports have grown by an average of 5.7 per cent per year, reaching $95.4 billion in 2012. They grew 5.6 per cent between 2011 and 2012, and six per cent growth is forecast this year. Energy exports dominate, but over the past decade, some lesser-known products have actually set the growth pace.

Energy 6.2%
Legumes 16%
Pumps 19%
Canola 21%
