Looking for a gun that doubles as art?
by Max Fawcett
If you’re looking for a dead-accurate rifle, you won’t go wrong with Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply. But if you want an object of desire and envy, and you’ve got a bit – okay a lot – of extra cash lying around? Head to London, and stop in at the headquarters of James Purdey and Sons Gun & Rifle Makers, where they can set you up with a custom-made shotgun or rifle that doubles as a piece of art.
They offer bolt-action rifles and shotguns (with both over-and-under and side-by-side barrel configurations), and measure you down to the millimeter in their West London Shooting Ground. And when it comes to customization, particularly when it comes to the materials used in and detailing on the barrel, it can get interesting – and expensive – in a hurry.
Our favourite? The all-Damascus gun, which is hand-crafted in Hammersmith using a damascene steel alloy that’s forged in Sweden from over 100 layers. Each gun is uniquely patterned, and then named and numbered using either conventional lettering or gold inlay.
