Senior executive: Darren Stroeder
Founded: 2011
Headquartered: Edmonton

Small business owners and entrepreneurs tend not to go into it for the joy of doing paperwork, which is why Edmonton-based Origami Accounting handles it for them. But the firm has found an innovative way to make its services more accessible to small businesses with variable cash flows: rather than charging an hourly fee or asking clients to fork out annually for their corporate tax returns, Origami charges a monthly fee (between $150 to $500 or more, depending on the size and complexity of the business). That means clients can focus on running their business, while also being free to ask as many questions as they need to without racking up billable hours.

“We’ve made paperwork as simple as a monthly envelope,” says Ashley Viens, Origami’s business manager. She means it literally, too – rather than meeting with an accountant to drop off files, businesses can simply put all their receipts for the months in an envelope and mail them to the firm. Origami handles everything from there. “If you’re a pipefitter and you’re in Fort McMurray, you don’t have time to come into an office in Edmonton. You can just put it in the mail.”
