Alberta's Largest Corporations Jockey for the Top Spot on the 2011 Venture 100 List

Edmonton, Alberta (September 1, 2011) - For the 10th consecutive year, Alberta Venture magazine releases its annual ranking of the top-grossing Alberta-based companies

Compiled by Alberta Venture’s editorial team with the assistance of PricewaterhouseCoopers, The Venture 100, Next 100 and the PWC Private 50 lists establish a snapshot of Alberta’s economic contributors over the last year and celebrate the success of the province’s thriving business community.

This year’s Venture 100 package is chockablock with 73 pages of lists, stories, graphs, charts and offers invaluable insights into the world of Albertan business. It’s full of facts and figures that can’t be found anywhere else, from the revenues and net incomes of Alberta’s 200 biggest companies to the names of the stock market superstars.

“We saw the economy bounce back in 2010 and that’s reflected in revenue increases almost across the board,” says Michael Ganley, editor of Alberta Venture. “The companies on the V100 and N100 saw an average growth in revenue of 26 per cent.”

Suncor Energy retains its spot as the biggest company in the province, with revenues up 38 per cent from a year ago to $34.3 billion. The average revenue increase for oil and gas companies on the lists was 46 per cent, with a number of junior companies doing very well by taking technologies designed for shale gas plays – horizontal drilling and hydrological fracturing – into old oil plays. The companies in the Top 10 on the Venture 100 are the same as a year earlier, although there was some shuffling of positions.

The print version of the Venture 100 rankings will hit newsstands on Tuesday, September 6. For those that can’t wait, this year’s online extension features the launch of a dedicated V100 microsite that compiles the last 5 years of data and articles into one easy-to-use interface. V100.albertaventure.com will allow online readers to navigate the lists by specific size, industry, growth rate, annual revenue, rank, and many other metrics in addition to providing expanded web-focused editorial content. The website also features mouse-over quick facts on many organizations and CEOs in addition to statistical breakdowns for every single company featured on the lists. “We’ve designed the site to be used as both the definitive guide to Albertan big business as well as a comprehensive database for all our V100 content” says Ruth Kelly, Publisher and CEO of Alberta Venture. “Building on the work we’ve done in the past, we hope to provide the Alberta business community with a resource that will be consulted year-round.”

Alberta Venture is Alberta’s only province-wide business magazine covering the latest issues and trends concerning Alberta’s business community.
