FOR WORKERS IN THE ENERGY sector, there’s nothing more important than on-site safety. Fortunately for employees at Terracon Geotechnique, the company has a pretty convincing track record when it comes to keeping workers out of harm’s way. The last time someone at Terracon suffered a lost-time accident (LTA) was in 1997.

The geosciences and engineering consulting firm, which works primarily in the Athabasca Oil Sands region, goes to great lengths to ensure its workers make it through their workdays unscathed, including offering extensive training to develop workers’ safety skills long before they ever reach site.

That could be the reason Terracon walked away with the 2010 Syncrude President’s Award for safest on-site program. Add to that a long list of well-compensated healthy-living options and it’s no wonder that Terracon has such a healthy work environment.

Health-and-wellness stipend
Employees get up to $250 a month toward gym memberships, yoga classes or recreational activities. The only activity not included? Golf, of course.

Injury compensation
Short-term disability (12 weeks) offers $1,150 a week. Long-term disability lasts until age 65 and offers up to $5,000 a month. All subsistence payments are tax-free.

On-the-ground inspections
Field Safety Advisors are required to spend 80 per cent of their time on-site, inspecting work procedures as they unfold.

Comprehensive safety manual
All employees are equipped with a Quality Management System handbook that outlines all safety and task procedures.

Accident prevention programs
Every employee is supplied with extensive training for accident prevention. The company president spends one week of every month conducting safety meetings.

Medical coverage
Every year, workers receive $1,500 toward medical requirements, including dental coverage, prescription glasses and massage treatments.

Cash bonus awards program
Employees who show exceptional workplace safety habits are rewarded with lucrative bonuses – the record being $14,000 for one employee one year. Terracon puts about 25 per cent of its net profits towards these bonuses.
