There are 266 urban municipalities in Alberta, and Lisa Holmes is trying to secure sustainable funding for each of them. Recently, Holmes, whose day job is being the mayor of Morinville, called out the NDP government for withdrawing a proposed $50-million boost to its Municipal Sustainability Initiative, reprimanding the province’s lack of consultation and volatile funding.
Holmes is also pushing to revamp the rules governing municipal elections, bringing them in line with provincial elections for 2017. Among the proposed amendments are increased fairness for Alberta taxpayers and strengthened provincial-municipal relations.
